Thinking Through Moving

Can 'thinking' be separated from 'moving'? How does improving our movement, though something like the Feldenkrais Method, improve our 'thinking' in images and words? These are some of the questions discussed in a presentation I made at the '12 International Conference on Thinking' (Melbourne, Australia, 2005). Avialble here for download is the PowerPoint I used in that presentation. It includes many ideas and quotes from Moshe Feldenkrais and other writers on movement, perception and thinking. In preparing it the talk I drew significantly on the first part of Feldenkrais' Awareness Though Movement and Carl Ginsburg's review of Alain Berthoz' The Brain's Sense of Movement ('Movement and the Mind', Journal of Consciousness Studies, Vol 8, No. 11, 2001 and in a revised version in The Feldenkrais Journal). In 2007 I presented this material again at the Feldenkrais Center for Movement Education and extended it with additional material on consciousness and learning.
